From 11th to 15th of July 2016 the Big Data Center of Excellence (ScaDS Dresden/Leipzig) is excited to host its first summer school for Big Data in Leipzig. The attractive program aims at students and young graduates, as well as other academic and industrial practitioners and researchers that operate in the field of Big Data. We offer an inspiring mix of motivating keynotes, online trainings, classes and excursions. The summer school teaches the basics of working with large and complex amounts of data and provides an overview of relevant approaches and solutions. Thus, the participants can gain an insight into current research areas and acquire basic practical Big Data skills. Furthermore, there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange ideas and to discuss the topics with other participants and speakers. The talks and keynotes in the morning will be held in English. For the practical sessions in the afternoon good English and java programming skills are required. The number of participants is limited so that we will select interested participants based on their provided information about motivation, prior knowledge and interests.
Be invited to dive into Big Data and the vibrant city of Leipzig with its amazing new Lakes Land and its cultural tradition.

Online Courses for preparation
Within the practical sessions of the Summerschool we assume that participants already know about Map Reduce and its basic primitives.
Here you can find an online course that teaches the basics of "Map Reduce" and "Load-Balancing". We kindly thank Prof. Dr. Andreas Thor from the HFTL for preparing the video sessions!
Intended audience
- Graduate and PHD students
- Industrial/Academic practioners & researchers
Prerequisites, Registration
The number of participants is limited so that we will select interested participants based on their provided information about motivation, prior knowledge and interests. In particular, participants need to have good Java programming skills (for hands-on sessions) and good English skills.
Due to the high number of registrations, we would like to ask participants to bring an own laptop for the practical sessions.
